Festa di San Basso
La Festa di San Basso è un evento molto atteso dalla comunità cuprense e non solo e affonda le sue radici nell’antichità, in cui le feste in onore del Santo erano sempre tre ogni anno: quella del 5 dicembre, che riguardava il giorno del suo martirio; quella del lunedì di Pasqua, che era stata istituita nel ricordo della duplice traslazione da Nizza a Cupra nel V secolo e dalla contrada La Civita al Castello di Marano nel 904; la terza, del primo luglio, che ricordava il ritrovamento del corpo di San Basso.
I primi documenti ufficiali, risalenti alla metà dell'Ottocento, attestano l’esistenza della cosiddetta “Festa delle cove”, ossia celebrazioni al termine della raccolta del grano, che si terrà con cadenza annuale fino al secondo conflitto mondiale.
Nel 1960, su iniziativa dell’allora parroco don Gerardo Di Girolami, nasce il Comitato Festeggiamenti San Basso che unisce gli intenti religiosi a quelli laici. È così che dal 1961 si inizia ufficialmente a festeggiare, sebbene il clima di giubilo partisse già dal “giovedì santo”, il lunedì di Pasqua (Pasquetta) con varie celebrazioni religiose nella chiesa dedicata al Santo e una processione che dalla parrocchia omonima raggiunge, con la reliquia di San Basso e l’accompagnamento della banda musicale, la foce del Sant’Egidio dove avviene la benedizione al mare e ai caduti del mare per poi fare ritorno alla chiesa di San Basso.
La festa continua poi con un ricco programma di eventi, tra cui spettacoli di musica, cabaret e magia, pubblicazioni editoriali su San Basso, bancarelle di gastronomia e artigianato, giochi per i bambini, la popolare pesca di beneficenza e la “Maratonina di Cupra Marittima”, gara podistica a cui fa seguito la “camminata ecologica”. A far splendere le vie del centro e il lungomare, le immancabili luminarie e gli spettacolari fuochi d’artificio.
La Festa di San Basso è un momento di grande importanza per la comunità locale, che si riunisce per celebrare la sua storia e le sue tradizioni, e rappresenta un'occasione unica per i visitatori di scoprire la bellezza di Cupra Marittima e della sua cultura.

The Feast of San Basso is a long-awaited event by the Cuprense community and beyond and has its roots in antiquity, in which there were always three feasts in honor of the Saint every year: that of December 5th, which concerned the day of his martyrdom; that of Easter Monday, which was established in memory of the double translation from Nice to Cupra in the 5th century and from the La Civita district to the Marano Castle in 904; the third, on July 1st, which commemorated the discovery of the body of San Basso. Dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, the first official documents attest to the existence of the so-called “Cove Festival”, that is celebrations at the end of the wheat harvest, which will be held annually until the Second World War.
In 1960, on the initiative of the then parish priest Don Gerardo Di Girolami, the San Basso Celebration Committee was born, combining religious and secular intentions. This is how since 1961, although the climate of jubilation started as early as “Maundy Thursday”, we officially begin to celebrate Easter Monday with various religious celebrations in the church dedicated to the Saint and a procession that reaches from the parish of the same name to the mouth of the Sant’Egidio with the relic of Saint Basso and the accompaniment of the musical band. Here the blessing takes place to the sea and to the fallen of the sea and then returns to the church of San Basso.
The festival then continues with a rich program of events, including music, cabaret and magic shows, editorial publications on Saint Basso, gastronomy and craft stalls, games for children, the popular charity fishing and the “Cupra Marittima Marathon”, foot race followed by the “ecological walk”. The inevitable lights and the spectacular fireworks make the streets of the center and the seafront shine.
The Feast of Saint Basso is a moment of great importance for the local community, which comes together to celebrate its history and traditions, and represents a unique opportunity for visitors to discover the beauty of Cupra Marittima and its culture.
