SAN BENEDETTO MARTIRE DA CUPRA
San Benedetto era cittadino della Cupra del III secolo, precristiana e pagana, ancora fedele alla dea Cupra, che qui aveva il suo santuario. Attratto dalla dottrina cristiana, che allora si diffondeva nel Piceno, si convertì al Cristianesimo. Il martirio avvenne a Cupra il giorno 13 del mese di ottobre nel 303 o nel 304.
Il Suo Corpo, gettato per disprezzo nel torrente Menocchia in piena, fu sospinto in mare e le correnti dell’Adriatico lo adagiarono sul lido quattro miglia a sud di Cupra ove oggi sorge la città di San Benedetto del Tronto. Da qui un agricoltore, su un carro, portò il Corpo del Martire sul colle e lo depose in un sepolcreto, proprio ove ora sorge l’abbazia.
Nel 1958 iniziò la rievocazione del trasferimento via mare del Santo da Cupra Marittima alla città di San Benedetto del Tronto per iniziativa dell’Associazione Marinai d’Italia delle due località, con l’approvazione di tutte le autorità religiose, civili e marittime. Le marinerie locali hanno sempre partecipato numerose a questa iniziativa.
Nell’Agosto del 2019 è stato dedicato a San Benedetto Martire il parco sito nell’area settentrionale del lungomare cuprense, a ridosso dell’area dei box per la piccola pesca e della foce del torrente Menocchia.

Saint Benedict was a third-century, pre-Christian and pagan citizen of Cupra, still faithful to the goddess Cupra, who had her sanctuary here. Attracted by Christian doctrine, which was then spreading in the Piceno area, he converted to Christianity. Martyrdom occurred in Cupra on October 13, 303 or 304.
Thrown out of disdain into the swollen Menocchia stream, his body was pushed into the sea, and the currents of the Adriatic laid it on the lido four miles south of Cupra, where the city of San Benedetto del Tronto stands today. From there, a farmer took in a cart the body of the martyr to the hill and placed it in a burial ground, right where the abbey now stands.
In 1958, the re-enactment of the transfer by sea of the Saint from Cupra Marittima to the city of San Benedetto del Tronto began on the initiative of the Sailors of Italy Association of the two localities, with the approval of all religious, civil and maritime authorities. Local navies have always participated in large numbers in this initiative.
In August 2019, the park located in the northern area of the Cuprense seafront, close to the area of the small fishing pits and the mouth of the Menocchia stream, was dedicated to San Benedetto Martire.
